Are you aware of what the RAMQ doesn’t cover?
Published on: October 3, 2014
Despite popular belief, the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) does not cover all health care services. Most people are aware of the basic coverage provided, such as doctors’ visits and emergency health care, but what about other medical costs? Some services aren’t covered at all, while others are covered only partially.
A number of factors come into play regarding whether you are covered by the RAMQ, including:
- Your age
- Whether or not you are a recipient of last-resort financial assistance.
If you have questions, it’s important to talk to your physician or health care provider before you undergo treatment. Visit the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec Web site for more information.
Costs not covered by the RAMQ
Here is a list of services that are typically not covered by the RAMQ:
- Physiotherapy, acupuncture, chiropractics, osteopathy, etc.
- Dental care
- Eye care
- Cosmetic procedures
- Treatment of varicose veins by injection in a private medical office
- The services of a psychologist
- Laboratory services (except at the hospital)
- Some highly specialized exams when performed outside an institution (CT, MRI)
- Bandages, splints, and other medical supplies.

Paying for costs not covered by the RAMQ
You have a few options for paying for health care services that are not covered:
- You can pay for the service yourself.
- Your group health insurance plan through your employer may cover the service.
- You can buy personal health insurance to pay for the service.
Extra health care costs can add up in a hurry, and this is why it’s important for you to protect yourself and your financial situation by investing in supplementary health insurance.
Private personal health insurance is a great option for self-employed workers and individuals who do not have group health insurance through an employer.
