Frequently Asked Questions

To be eligible for Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage, the event in question must be fortuitous and unforeseen, out of your control, and serious enough to require you to cancel, interrupt, extend, or modify your trip.

The coverage provided by your credit card company may have limitations or restrictions. It is important to review your policy thoroughly for coverage details. It is often recommended that you purchase additional coverage for complete protection.

Check your credit card coverage for the following:

Travel duration
Travel insurance cannot be purchased once you depart from Quebec. It is important to check the length of stay covered by your credit card company, as well as any restrictions based on age.

Emergency medical care coverage
There are often strict eligibility and stability requirements based on your current health. Make sure you understand the exclusions in your coverage prior to your departure. You could be quite unhappy to learn that a health condition is excluded right when you need emergency medical care. Also make sure the coverage amounts are enough, and inquire about any deductibles you may have to pay.

Trip cancellation and interruption
If you incurred fees up front, make sure the amount covered under trip interruption/cancellation is enough to save you from financial losses. Most credit card companies do not cover trip interruption or cancellation, and when they do, the maximums are not sufficient to fully cover your costs. Blue Cross can provide you with coverage that protects you in the case of unforeseen situations.

Protect yourself and your family. Don’t risk your financial security with incomplete coverage. With Blue Cross travel insurance, you enjoy complete medical coverage by a travel insurance company recognized around the world.

Yes—provided you purchased your trip (either fully or partially) and obtained Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage before the situation became publicly known. The event (or the risk of it occurring) is considered publicly known from the moment it is announced in the media. Therefore, Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage will not apply in the following situations:

  • If a new travel insurance contract is purchased, or if a trip is paid for (fully or partially) on or after the date of the media announcement.
  • If a trip covered by the Annual Multi-Trip product is purchased (fully or partially) on or after the date of the media announcement.

No. Prepaid travel expenses must not be recoverable in any way to be eligible for reimbursement.

Emergency Medical Care Coverage
The travel advisories of the Government of Canada do not affect insurance eligibility. However, we recommend that you follow government and health authority recommendations.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption Coverage
Trip Cancellation and Interruption coverage is subject to certain limitations or exclusions when government warnings are issued.

If you have any questions about your coverage, please contact us at 1-888-822-5383.

A pre-existing medical condition is a medical condition, illness, or injury that already exists before you travel and before your Blue Cross travel insurance coverage takes effect. For a pre-existing medical condition to be covered by travel insurance, it must be stable for a period defined in the contract. For more information, please contact one of our agents or read our blog article on the topic.
